The following is a list of courses recommended by Rutgers faculty for the Summer Scholars Program. Please note that courses on this list are not necessarily offered every summer. For a current list of course offerings and meeting schedules, refer to the University Schedule of Classes.
Due to the intense nature of the Summer Session, it is recommended that students take introductory level courses offered in Session II (late June - late July) or Session III (early July - mid-Aug), which meet after the high school term has ended.
The "blues" is more than just a musical genre. The "blues" is sound, feeling, and history. It is an intersection that connects past, present, and future. In this course students will learn about this distinctly “American” music though an exploration of music, film, and literature. Students will screen films such as Bessie starring Queen Latifah, listen to a wide range of music from hymns to hip-hop, and explore how the blues influenced literature and art through figures such as Langston Hughes and Romare Bearden.
